OBAN, SCOTLAND - 23 AUGUST 2014: Competitors make their way around the island of Kerrera during the 2014 Oban Sea Kayak Race.

I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph the 2014 Oban Sea Kayak Race.

The Oban Sea Kayak Race is organised by 15 individuals, known as the 'Organising Team', with all proceeds going to Oban Lifeboat. The race is in its 5th year and sees competitors from around the world compete against each other as they circumnavigate 20km of challenging waters around the rugged but picturesque coastline of the island of Kerrera.

This year's Oban Sea Kayak Race winner was Ivan Lawlor, a previous winner and multiple world champion. Ivan completed the route in an overall time of 01:45:22, just beating Calum Urquhart (01:49:55) into second place. In third place was Nicky Cresser in a time of 01:53:27 (Nicky also came first in the touring race category).

Altogether, seventy people took part in the race with a number of prizes on offer for different categories. As the race website describes, the organisers offer the kayakers 'a demanding route, through remote and exposed waters, but one that makes for a memorable and fun event'. It certainly seems so and I'd like to thank in particular Dave Nicol, Gus Brydon, Adam, Donna and Eric for making me feel so welcome.
