I had an enjoyable time over the Christmas period photographing Merrell brand ambassador Doctor Andrew Murray and Get Active Running owner / UVU Racing (at the time - now Salomon) sponsored athlete Donnie Campbell on a mountain running photo shoot in Scotland.

I'd first heard of expedition runner Andrew Murray when Merrell's PR agency approached me to photograph him in advance of his Scotland to Sahara adventure in 2011 (a 2659 mile route which Andrew completed in 78 days, averaging 34 miles a day). In 2014, Andrew came to mind again when the BBC Adventure Show broadcast a programme of he and Donnie successfully running Scotland's ten highest mountains in one day.

Andrew Murray and Donnie Campbell are no strangers to long distance running. In 2012, Andrew competed in 7 ultra marathons on 7 continents in 7 days. He's also placed first in a number of global runs, including the North Pole marathon. Donnie meanwhile has represented Scotland running at 100km and in 2011 he ran 184 miles from Glasgow to his home in Skye, without sleeping, in a time of 44.5 hours.

For our mountain running shoot, I chose something more leisurely. Andrew and I met Donnie at 0630am in Glen Etive for a dawn ascent of 1078m high Ben Starav (a Munro in the West Highlands of Scotland that I'd scoped out for a photo shoot last year). During the day we shot a variety of running images for PR / media use in advance of Andrew and Donnie's upcoming attempt to run 550km across the Namib desert in February 2015 before Andrew and I continued the shoot in nearby Glen Coe. Having seeing Andrew and Donnie run in Scotland, I've got every confidence they will make it across the Namib and I wish them all the best.
