It was a nice end to 2013 to be published in the last issue of the year by The Great Outdoors magazine (also known as TGO). I was approached to contribute a winter hiking image in or around the Lawyers range, plus a few words.

The image I chose was this one of Christine Ryalls and Kenny Pollock approaching the summit of Meall nan Tarmachan on a perfect Scottish winter's day back in December 2010. The words I used to accompany the image were;

For many years, my winter trips were planned in advance and the weather was a lottery, Before each trip, a flurry of often blatantly optimistic emails followed the daily forecast. Over time, I've learnt its best to plan trips nearer the time. Meall nan Tarmachan a few winters back was no exception. Buoyed by reports of blue skies and perfect neve, we decided only the evening before to head up to Killin. The drive up to the then-in-place National Trust Visitor Centre at 460m was our equivalent of an alpine telepherique and allowed us to spend as much of the day high up on a hill as possible which, after 5 additional ascents, has come to be one of my favourite days out in Scotland.

My thanks to TGO editor, Emily Rodway, and Daniel Neilson for using my Meall nan Tarmachan winter hiking image. It ended up as a 2-page spread in their Escape section and I think it looks great in print.
