The year in review: 12 adventure sports images from 2013

An end-of-year presentation showing some of the images I've taken during 2013. I hope you like them as much as I've enjoyed taking them. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mountain Biking in Scotland

January - Mountain biking in Strathpeffer

In January, I photographed the Strathpuffer, a 24-hour mountain bike race held in north-west Scotland. Here, winner of the Solo Male category, Team JMC member Jason Miles, rides through Strathpeffer Forest on Day 1.

Patagonian Expedition Race

February - Adventure racing in Chile

In February, I headed south again to Patagonia, as part of the press team photographing the Patagonian Expedition Race. The athletes trek, mountain bike and kayak their way 700km+ across the wilderness of Chilean Patagonia.

Walking in the Scottish Highlands

March - Winter climbing in Lochaber

After Chile, I returned to catch what I thought would be the last of the Scottish winter season, joining Alex Haken and Stas Burek on an enjoyable climb of the east ridge of Carn Dearg Mheadonach, a grade II winter climb near Ben Nevis.

Walking in the Scottish Highlands

April - Winter hiking in the West Highlands

As luck would have it, Scottish winter continued well into April and we made the most of it with a classic alpine-like day out on the Munro, Ben Starav, in the West Highlands.

Kite surfing in Scotland

May - Kite surfing near Edinburgh

During May, I was often close to my home town of Edinburgh. Just 40 minutes drive, near Dunbar, Belhaven Bay is home to John Muir Country Park and its great 3km long beach. When the wind is right, there are excellent kite surfing opportunities.

Walking and scrambling in Wales

June - Scrambling in Snowdonia

June saw us head south for a change, to Snowdonia National Park in Wales. Four days of scrambling in 30+ degree heat was exhausting but Crib Goch, the Snowdon Horseshoe and an ascent of Tryfan were worthy highlights.

TORRIDON, SCOTLAND - JULY 06, 2013: Competitors on the A896 during the cycle leg of the Celtman Extreme Scottish Triathlon

July - A triathlon in Torridon

I had a great time shooting the Celtman Extreme Scottish Triathlon in July, although the weather for the most part was terrible. The above shot shows competitors road cycling on the A896 not far out of Shieldaig.

Walking in the Scottish Highlands

August - Backpacking on Beinn a'Bhuird

August saw me back on foot with a backpacking trip in the Cairngorms National Park. After camping out the night before, we went for one super long day scrambling up Beinn a'Bhuird and then hiking over to Ben Avon.

Surfing in Tenerife

September - Surfing in the Canary Islands

September saw me seek some guaranteed sunshine as I headed to the Canary Islands to photograph surfing in Tenerife. The popular tourist resort, La Playa de las Americas, has some of the most accessible coastline on the island.

Climbing in Scotland

October - Rock climbing in the Cairngorms

Heading away from the coastline, it was back to the Cairngorms National Park in October for an early morning climb of Pygmy Ridge in Coire an t'Sneachda.

November - Winter hiking on Lochnagar

The first winter snows arrived in November so we took the opportunity for a winter scramble up the Stuic, a rocky buttress which gives access to the summit of the Munro, Lochnagar.

Walking in the Scottish Highlands

December - Winter hiking in the Cairngorms

Finally, a bit of a cheat for December as I've taken some time out before Christmas. This image is from December 2012 and captures Dave Cawthorne of Tweed Valley MRT walking in to Coire an t'Sneachda.
